When we first arrived in Cotani, they had 3 flushing toilets for their entire community. Most citizens did not have access to the toilets, so as a result their water sources and food sources were being contaminated. Our plan is to build 37 eco-latrines that will serve each family in the community. Eco-latrines are composting toilets which use no water. After a year the compost may be used on non-edible plants and fruit trees. Our team is also looking into the possibility of installing flush toilets at the local church. This presents extra challenges as a septic system uses lots of water and lots of land.
Our team built five eco-latrines in November 2009 and built two more in August 2010. We are committed to the success of this project so a large part of our returning visits focus on sustainability and education.
